A variety of agencies and organisations are working on social, community or public housing. Find out who else works in this area including the organisations that the council may work alongside in relation to housing initiatives.

  • Kāinga Ora Homes and Communities – the central government Crown agency responsible for addressing the public housing need in New Zealand. Read more about their work at kaingaora.govt.nz
  • Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – the government agency for New Zealand’s housing and urban development work programme. HUD leads several strategic areas and policies regulating New Zealand’s housing and urban development system. The HUD Public Housing Plan sets out the Government’s public housing supply intentions for the next few years and includes Whanganui as a focus area.
  • HUDs work also includes Housing First, which aims to provide permanent housing to people experiencing homelessness; and Te Kāhui Kāinga Ora HUD's Māori Housing Unit, which works to boost housing and urban development outcomes for Māori.   • Ministry of Social Development (MSD) – the central government agency that provides a variety of support for people in relation to housing. This includes applications to live in public housing (the housing register) and support for people who need emergency housing. Read more at Housing - Work and Income
  • Community Housing Providers (CHPs) – these organisations are regulated by the government in their role to help provide rental community housing. Community Housing Providers in the Whanganui District include:
    • Compass Housing Services - a not-for-profit, regulated Community Housing Provider that provides tenancy and property management services in Auckland and the regional north island, including in Whanganui. Read more at https://compasshousingnz.org
    • The Salvation Army – a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) that provides long-term rental community housing to individuals and families throughout New Zealand.
