Whanganui District Council recognises that there is a housing shortage in Whanganui requiring urgent and long-term action.

The positive effects of good housing are far-reaching including families living in more stable environments and improved health and education outcomes for children. Over the long term, good healthy housing has been shown to benefit whole communities through reduced costs to the health system, fewer GP visits and hospitalisations of children for things like rheumatic fever.

Whanganui District Council developed a housing strategy in 2019 and has allocated resources to support implementation. We have also completed a strategic housing investment plan in 2021.
