Public and rental carparks
Kerbside parking
There are 629 kerbside metered parking spaces and 1118 time-restricted areas around the central city area. These are monitored to ensure regular turnover and availability of spaces. Infringers are ticketed, fined and followed up. Suburbs are serviced on demand.
Paid parking is between 8.00am and 5.30pm on weekdays and Saturdays. The Parking Services team patrol on a regular basis, including Saturdays.
Off-street parking
All off-street carparks are sealed, marked, have a minimum of security lighting and are signposted. St Hill Street, Ingestre Street, Drews Avenue and Moutoa Quay off-street car parks have pay-by-plate machines installed.

What to do if someone takes your rental carpark
If you find another vehicle occupying your paid-for rental carpark, please notify Whanganui District Council as soon as possible – call 06 349 0001, email yourcouncil@whanganui.govt.nz or use the Antenno reporting app (you can download this free app here.)
Once you’ve notified the council, you can park your vehicle on the street nearest to your work location without payment and without adhering to the time limit – please do not park in another rental carpark or you may be liable to an infringement notice.
The council will endeavour to have a Parking Services officer attend your parking situation as soon as possible following your notification.
Please provide the following information when you contact us:
- the rental carpark location
- your rental carpark number
- your vehicle registration
- the vehicle registration of the offending vehicle (if able)
- the location you have parked your vehicle (again, please do not use another rental carpark).
