Who would make a good Whanganui District Council representative? Someone who is driven to see our district thrive!

You must be able to:

  • manage competing demands
  • communicate effectively
  • keep an open mind
  • work well with others
  • engage with new information
  • be open to learning about finances

Successful candidates take the time to listen to their communities and represent their views.

In Whanganui, you can stand for:

  • mayor
  • one of ten general ward councillors
  • one of two Māori ward councillors
  • one of seven rural community board members

Nominations for these positions open on 4 July 2025 and close at 12 noon on 1 August

To stand as a candidate, you must:

  • complete a nomination form
  • be nominated by two people who are enrolled to vote in the area where you are planning to stand
  • consent to your nomination going forward
  • pay a $200 deposit, which may be refunded depending on election results
  • be a New Zealand citizen, over 18, and enrolled to vote

You may also provide:

  • a 150-word profile statement
  • a photo

Nomination forms will soon be available on this page and at the Whanganui District Council at 101 Guyton Street.

Elected members receive salaries which vary according to position responsibilities and the size of each council. The agency responsible for setting the salaries is the Remuneration Authority.
