Multicultural March 2020 Whanganui

Race Unity Day

Multicultural March events in Aotearoa New Zealand are held around Race Relations Day, and provide the opportunity for all peoples to come together, learn from each other, share, celebrate and enjoy the richness of shared cultural experiences.

A range of events is taking place in Whanganui in support of Multicultural March 2020. Whanganui District Council’s Welcoming Communities Co-ordinator, Katy Newton, says, “Everyone in our community is invited to all of these events. This is a time for kotahitanga – togetherness and solidarity.”

Multicultural March events in Whanganui feature:

  • An evening for women to share customary stories from their motherlands takes place at 75 St Hill Street on Wednesday, 4 March 2020 from 6.30pm.
  • From Monday, 9 March to Thursday, 12 March, an exhibition of our cultural diversity will be held at the UCOL Atrium on Rutland Street. At about 12 noon each day there will be an interactive cultural activity.
  • A rainbow of colour to promote unity will take place at a Holi celebration at Peat Park on Tuesday, 10 March from 5.30pm. The colours symbolise that no matter your skin colour, religion or social status, once covered in colour we are all equal. Wear a white t-shirt for best effect.
  • Race Relations Commissioner, Meng Foon, will visit Whanganui on Saturday, 14 March with a welcome and speeches at the Whanganui River Markets (near the Paddle Steamer Waimarie dock) from 9.30am. Come and hear the Race Unity message directly from the Human Rights Commission.
  • The Whanganui Islamic Association invites you to the first anniversary of the Christchurch mosque attacks on Sunday, 15 March. Let’s come together, reflect and stand in unity with our Muslim brothers and sisters. (Other details still to be confirmed – please refer back to this web page.)
  • Race Relations Day on Saturday, 21 March sees the internationally-renowned Soweto Gospel Choir bring their Freedom tour to the Royal Wanganui Opera House in honour of the father of their “Rainbow Nation”, the late Nelson Mandela.
