If you’ve got an idea for a community-based arts project which requires funding, the deadline for round one of the Creative Communities Scheme is Friday, May 27.

The Creative Communities Scheme is a partnership between the Whanganui District Council and Creative New Zealand to promote local arts.

Arts Coordinator Debbie Kapohe says the funding is to create opportunities for the community to engage with local arts activities, support diverse artistic traditions or encourage young people to engage with the arts.

“The scheme is vital to developing the arts in Whanganui because it funds quality projects by established artists which supports our local arts scene. Some of these projects are in line with our iconic events like Wanganui Opera Week which means we can add to our iconic events or create new activities within that event.

“Other projects are stand alone and unique, for example, the Puanga Pictures film festival which will be screening during Puanga (Maori New Year) and will include a selection of New Zealand features and documentaries, highlights from the Wairoa Maori Film Festival and short films with a Whanganui connection."
