Mayor Annette Main is encouraging people in our community to nominate a “local hero” in the New Zealander of the Year Awards which close next week.

“There are so many people who do so much in our community and are not often recognised for their contribution,” Mayor Main said.

“They do not seek this recognition but they work hard on our behalf, making our place just that much better for all of us.

“This is one way we can say thank you to them, whether they are caregivers, volunteers, community leaders, fundraisers, neighbours, sportspeople, business leaders or contribute to our wellbeing in some other way.

“If you’re involved in arts, sport, community service, health, public service, the environment, volunteers, tourism, business, rural, education, entertainment, science, technology, innovation or cultural development, to name a few areas, there’s sure to be people you know who deserve recognition.”

As well as the Kiwibank Local Heroes category, nominations are also being sought for:

  • University of Auckland Young New Zealander of the Year
  • Metlifecare Senior New Zealander of the Year
  • Mitre 10 Community of the Year
  • Sanitarium Innovator of the Year

Nominations for the 2015 New Zealander of the Year Awards can be made until 30 September 2014 by completing the short online nomination form at www.nzawards.co.nz or pick up a form from any Kiwibank branch or Mitre 10 store.

From late November, special ceremonies are being held to honour Local Heroes in regions throughout New Zealand. All recipients of Local Heroes awards will be presented with a Kiwibank medal in recognition of their inspiration and contribution to their communities.

The Local Heroes Awards will celebrate one national winner at the New Zealander of the Year Gala Awards Presentation Dinner in Auckland in February 2015. The winner will be selected from three finalists, who will be sent on an all-expenses paid trip to Auckland to attend the Awards ceremony.
