Whanganui continues to build its vibrant events calendar and Whanganui District Council offers funding and guidance to support event organisers.

Paul Chaplow, who oversees Whanganui District Council’s tourism marketing and events functions, says “events in the region enrich the lives of locals, attract visitors and provide a boost to businesses. Backing local events is essential for attracting visitors, enhancing the visitor experience and making Whanganui an outstanding place to live.”

Applications for event funding are now open for events scheduled between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. The application window closes on June 18, 2025.

“Events bring energy and character to our city, strengthening its identity and appeal,” Chaplow says. “Whanganui is known for its outstanding annual events, and we also have an incredible pool of creative individuals eager to develop fresh and exciting experiences.”

“We want to hear from both well-established event organisers and those with new ideas. We also encourage applications from organisers outside the district who are interested in bringing events to Whanganui.”

Chaplow highlighted the impact of key events such as Cemetery Circuit, Vintage Weekend, and the HoopNation Junior Showcase, which attract large crowds, stimulate local businesses, and enhance Whanganui’s vibrancy.

“Supporting events aligns with our broader goals of boosting the local economy, drawing in visitors, and positioning Whanganui as a fantastic place to live, work, and explore,” he says.

Events also play a vital role in shaping Whanganui’s national reputation as a hub of creativity, culture, and opportunity.

Whanganui District Council aims to support a diverse mix of events, recognising their role in fostering community engagement and promoting values such as creativity, inclusivity, and a balanced lifestyle.

Given the competitive nature of funding, organisers must demonstrate strong planning, economic and social impact, and a pathway toward long-term sustainability.

In addition to funding, the council offers marketing expertise to help event organisers refine their promotional strategies.

“We provide marketing advice and constructive feedback to help events grow and thrive,” Chaplow says. “Even our most successful events benefit from new insights, and we see our role as offering both financial backing and strategic support.”

Whanganui District Council welcomes funding applications and encourages anyone with a new event idea to reach out and discuss their vision.
