New Zealand Glassworks (NZG) celebrates its first birthday on 29 September 2017 and to celebrate, NZG wants to give you a gift!
On Saturday, October 14, two works of glass, designed by members of the community, will be created by glass artists, as a fun and exciting way to celebrate NZG’s first birthday.
“Our birthday competition will be a great opportunity for the community to get creative and design a piece of glass. We get a lot of people coming in to see how glass is made, but to get their winning piece made will be something very special,” says NZG Manager Scott Redding.
Mr Redding says during the first year of New Zealand Glassworks, it has grown into a vibrant national and community facility.
“It’s been a brilliant first year. Not only are local artists using the facility, but the facility has attracted national and international artists too. One of the highlights has been introducing the art of glass making to people through our workshops. We had an 86-year-old participant at one of our workshops and she thoroughly enjoyed it.
“The support shown from glass artists and the greater community has been extremely positive. People are amazed by the art glass on display and the facility as a whole. Having a facility and gallery at an international level has cemented Whanganui as the heart of glass for New Zealand and it can only grow stronger in years to come.”
Mr Redding says the year ahead looks to be a busy one.
“NZG will be introducing more community workshops, including flameworking, bead making, and coldwork workshops during 2018. The annual New Zealand Society of Art Glass will have its member’s exhibition at NZG during December and January and preparations have already started for the first Australasian Glass Conference to be held in Whanganui in February 2019.”
