Mayor Annette Main today said Cr Michael Laws has not formally advised her of his resignation from the Wanganui District Council.
“I have only seen media reports – I haven’t heard from Cr Laws directly,” Mayor Main said.
“While it will be disappointing to lose a councillor so early in the term, and the consequent need for a by-election, we recognise that people’s lives change according to personal circumstances.
“It will also be disappointing for the people who felt Cr Laws still had a contribution to make as a councillor.”
No decisions about the timing of a by-election can be made until Cr Laws formally tenders his resignation. A by-election is estimated to cost about $40,000.
