The next stage of Whanganui’s City to North Mole Shared Pathway has begun.
Whanganui District Council Development Engineer Damien Wood says the existing pathway from Balgownie Avenue (behind AFFCO) to Gilberd Street, near Q-West Boat Builders, will be upgraded to a concrete shared pathway. Once complete, it will be suitable for all users, including those using mobility scooters and wheelchairs.
W&W Construction Ltd has been awarded the construction contract for this stage of the City to North Mole Shared Pathway, which is part of the New Zealand Transport Agency-funded Urban Cycleways Programme.
“We are excited to see another stage of work progressing the development of this fantastic recreational and commuter facility for the Whanganui community. Most of the project feedback we have seen has been overwhelmingly supportive,” says Damien.
During this work, expected to take until the end of June, the existing pathway will be closed, with users encouraged to use a detour via Heads Road.
“We appreciate that this work will cause disruption to pathway users. Please take care on Heads Road during the construction period.”
The first section of Shared Pathway from the Whanganui City Bridge to Bedford Avenue opened in December 2016. Once complete, the $1.29M pathway will create a riverside trail that connects the town centre to the Tasman Sea and is an iconic end point for the Mountains to Sea New Zealand Cycle Trail.
