After postponing Picnic in the Park in December last year, the Wanganui District Council Youth Committee has decided not to reschedule the event in the early months of this year.
Instead, the Committee will donate sausages and drinks to family friendly events in the community.
Picnic in the Park, which takes place at Kowhai Park on the first Saturday of December, is the Youth Committee’s flagship event. It was scheduled for December 6 last year but cancelled due to heavy rain. It will be held again in December this year.
Youth Committee Co-Chair Renee Harrison says the Committee decided not to reschedule Picnic in the Park because there are a number of events for young people and families coming up, such as the Waitangi Day celebrations on February 6, the Bike Wise Family Bike Ride on February 9 and National Children’s Day on March 2.
“This is also the time of year when many Youth Councillors are preparing to leave for university or for other exciting adventures, so there are fewer organisers around. We hope that families will join us again in December 2014 for a fantastic Picnic in the Park at the end of what’s going to be a fantastic year! We are still going to make a donation to the Cancer Society as planned, as they were the intended recipients of the proceeds from Picnic in the Park.”
We will be donating sausages to the Bike Wise Family Bike Ride and to the Waitangi Day celebrations at Pakaitore/Motoua Gardens but there are plenty left over for other family friendly events.”
