Part of the Whanganui Riverbank walkway will be closed from Thursday, September 22, for about 11 weeks while contractors place rip rap rock to construct 205 metres of protection to prevent ongoing bank erosion and settlement.
The work is needed so the new shared pathway from Whanganui City Bridge to Cobham Bridge can be completed. The construction area is behind the SteamRail Wanganui sheds and requires angular rock to be placed so the full width of the shared pathway can be built.
Detours will be in place diverting users away from the construction site. Detour points will be at the Hear My Train a’ Comin’ sculpture and at the Cobham Bridge. Pathway users will be detoured on to Taupo Quay while the pathway is closed.
The work is being done by B Bullock 2009 Ltd.
It is expected that the pathway will be closed until Friday, December 9. It will be open for the Wanganui Harrier Club’s annual marathon on December 10.
