Roads update - 22 January 2016

Motorists are urged to take care on blind corners throughout the Whanganui District roading network as crews continue to work on repairs following June’s severe weather event.
There have been a few collisions where vehicles have hit road work equipment after travelling too fast around blind corners. Please observe road signs and maintain a safe, slow speed.
There are currently 18 heavy machinery crews clearing slips and reforming roadside drainage in the following areas:
- Whanganui River Road
- Papaiti Road
- Kauarapaoa Road
- Junction Road
- Owhakura Road
- Rangitatau East Road
- Siceley Road
- Watershed Road
- Mangahowhai Road
Road closures
Papaiti Road, at approximately 13km from the town boundary at culvert 47, will be closed for repairs to a slip caused by the June 2015 floods. Starting on Tuesday, January 26, the road will be closed from 9.00am to 4.00pm every day except Sundays. This work is expected to take approximately three weeks.
2WD restrictions
Caution needed due to slippery surface on Kauarapaoa Road.
Heavy truck and trailer restrictions
Burrell Road – closed to heavy traffic with trailer (truck access only).
Projected completion timelines for Whanganui River Road work
- Matahiwi to Ranana – mid-February
- Koriniti to Matahiwi – mid-February
- Ranana to Jerusalem – end of March
- Jerusalem to the Ruapehu District boundary – end of May
- State Highway 4 to Atene – end of June
