Sarjeant director heads to new role in Auckland

Greg Anderson, director of the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui has been appointed to a new role as Deputy Director Operations at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki.

The council’s general manager community and customer experience Marianne Cavanagh says Greg Anderson has given 15 years of service to the gallery and community and has played a key role in the Sarjeant Gallery Redevelopment project.

She says, “Greg was at the forefront of fundraising for the redevelopment, in partnership with the chair of the Sarjeant Gallery Trust, Nicola Williams.

“Together they raised and secured tens of millions of dollars towards the strengthening and extending of the historic gallery – and its future is now assured. The iconic Edwardian-era gallery will be earthquake-strengthened and restored and the gallery’s nationally significant collection will be protected with purpose-built storage facilities.”

Marianne Cavanagh says Greg Anderson has also worked hard to ensure that the gallery operation is run by a professional and motivated group of staff and curators who are all looking forward to the Sarjeant’s grand re-opening at Pukenamu Queen’s Park in 2024.

Council chief executive David Langford says, “On behalf of the Sarjeant Gallery and Whanganui District Council, I thank Greg for his dedication, patience and perseverance over the years. We congratulate Greg on his new role in Auckland and wish him and his family all the best as they start a new chapter in their lives.”

Greg Anderson’s last day at the Sarjeant Gallery will be 14 October. David Langford says, “We recognise that the position of director for the Sarjeant Gallery is of significant importance and the recruitment process for that role is already underway.”
