Saturday parking reminders for the community
Published on 20 October 2022
Whanganui District Council is reminding the community that metered parking hours operate between 8.00am and 5.30pm during weekdays and on Saturdays.
General manager - community and customer experience, Marianne Cavanagh, says, “If you’re set to enjoy this Labour Weekend by meeting friends in town, doing some shopping in the CBD or attending a central-city Heritage Month event, please be mindful of the parking time limits displayed on our meters.”
She says, “The council has been unable to consistently monitor metered parking hours on Saturdays for some time, mainly due to ongoing staff shortages because of illness. Our parking services staff are now back at full levels, so we’d like to remind our community that metered carparks are continually monitored on Saturdays from 8.00am until 5.30pm.
“Saturdays in Whanganui can be one of the busiest days of the week in our CBD. To allow everybody the opportunity to park centrally when they’d like to, we need to ensure the regular turnover and the availability of spaces.
“We’d also like to remind everyone that the council’s parking team monitor public carparks on behalf of all of the community. Please treat them with respect as they’re doing their best to help,” Marianne Cavanagh says.
For those needing to park their vehicle for an extended period on Saturdays or at any time during the week, there are other parking options available around town.
Parking maps with available central city options are displayed in Victoria Avenue and other carparks are available on side streets outside of the immediate CBD area. Parking is free on Sundays and public holidays.
