The Whanganui Regional Museum has set Saturday 16 March as its reopening date.

The temporary site at 62 Ridgway Street closed in December and the final phase of exhibition installation is underway in the Watt Street building.

Over 2,000 square metres of public space will receive the final touches over the next few weeks before the doors are open again to the public and some of the questions buzzing around will finally be answered. What’s happened to the street? Is the sunfish back? What about the waka?  

There will be a full range of new and renewed exhibitions within a beautifully restored museum building and an impressive schedule of entertainment and in-house events are planned for the opening weekend.

Director Frank Stark says “What members of the public may not be aware of, are all the behind-the-scenes improvements which have also taken place.

"These include new, climate-controlled storage spaces and kilometres of new shelving to hold the collections, new technical work areas and completely revamped electrical and communications networks. The buildings are now earthquake-safe and are topped off by a brand new roof. All we need now is people.”
