Whanganui District Council cracks down on roaming dogs

Whanganui District Council is taking a zero-tolerance approach to dogs found roaming in response to increasing reports of dogs attacking cats in the Gonville, outer Gonville and Tawhero areas.

Council Chief Executive, Kym Fell says, “Under the Dog Control Act, dog owners are responsible for keeping control of their dog at all times which includes making sure it can’t escape from their property.

“While our animal management officers follow up all reports of roaming dogs, we are stepping up our response over the next month. Any dogs found roaming will be immediately impounded and an infringement issued,” Mr Fell says.

“We will also pursue prosecutions of owners of dogs identified as mauling cats or any other animal.”

Mr Fell asks members of the public to report roaming dogs.

“If you see any roaming dogs report them to the Council immediately on (06) 349 0001 day or night. We will have someone on site to investigate as quickly as possible.”

Because dogs often roam without their owners’ knowledge, Mr Fell reminds dog owners to check their property to ensure their dog cannot escape.

“This means making sure it is fenced, gates are not left open and the dog is secured in an appropriate place on the property at night and when you are not at home.

“It’s also prudent for cat owners to keep their cats inside at night. This will keep them safe from roaming dogs as well preventing them from getting injured in cat fights,” says Mr Fell.
