Whanganui District rain event - update #2

Whanganui District Emergency Management is continuing to carefully monitor rainfall in our district.

No areas in Whanganui are currently being evacuated by the Civil Defence Emergency Management Team but we advise people in Taupo Quay, Putiki and Whanganui East to be prepared to evacuate as weather is unpredictable and the situation is likely to change.

Horizons reports that the rainfall system has broken into three separate rainfall bands.

We are currently at the end of the first band. The second band arrived tonight and continues on to tomorrow morning. The third band will arrive mid afternoon and evening on Wednesday, April 2017 (tomorrow).

Roading information

State Highway 4 is closed between Whanganui River Road and Raetihi due to multiple slips and flooding.

Our infrastructure team has cleared up a slip on the Whanganui River Road between Jerusalem and Ranana, but please take care on this road.

There is surface flooding on Longacre Road, Okoia Road and Waikupa Road. Drivers are reminded to take it easy and drive to the conditions.

The Waitotara Valley Road in the South Taranaki District is closed due to rising river levels
