Whanganui East Pool

The Whanganui East Pool on Tinirau Street will open for the summer on Wednesday, 18 December.

Whanganui District Council’s general manager community and customer experience, Marianne Cavanagh, says pool staff are looking forward to welcoming visitors for the summer season.

The Whanganui East pool complex includes a 33-metre outdoor pool, a learner pool, an open-air hydroslide and barbecue facilities.

Marianne Cavanagh says the pool will be open to the whole community for walk-in visits until Wednesday, 5 February – then remain open for bookings only into autumn.

During the council’s recent Long-Term Plan 2024-34 deliberations, elected representatives debated whether to close the Whanganui East Pool to reduce the cost of rates. In the end, a decision was made to keep the pool open for the 2024/25 summer season while a long-term plan for outdoor swimming in Whanganui is explored.

“This season, opening hours will be somewhat reduced with the pool open from 11.00am-5.00pm Tuesday-Saturday,” Marianne Cavanagh says. “These hours ensure that the pool is open for the best hours of the day while also providing a committed rostered team to operate the pool.”

Safety improvements have also been carried out.

“In response to safety concerns, the springboard has been replaced with two fixed diving blocks. These can be used for competitive swimming starts practice, as well as for general diving and bombing fun by kids and adults alike.”

The diving blocks adhere to international Fina Facilities rules for pools.

“We’re committed to maintaining the highest safety standards while offering an enjoyable experience for everyone,” Marianne Cavanagh says.
